Whether your house is 18th century or a new modern build, what matters most is that the front door works together with the style and design of the exterior of your home. Every new homeowner will inevitably end up with the decision of replacing their new front door and with so much choice out there the decision never gets any easier. There are a few fundamental things that you should consider
What will your new door be made of? There are currently 3 basic choices on the market at the moment; Wood, UPVC and Composite doors. Wood can be expensive and quite a long process for making and fitting. UPVC is a common material but can look cheap and colours can fade in direct sunlight. Composite doors are just what they say, a composite arrangement of materials are used in the door, hence a ‘composite door’. Most modern composite doors have a timber hardwood sub frame and are filled with a high density polyurethane between two skins of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP).
Having decided on which type material that you are going to choose then it’s on with the design of the door, colour choices and door furniture. If you live in a period property it makes sense to choose a door that complements the building, so a victorian style door for a victorian property and a Edwardian door for an Edwardian property etc.
Colour is a very personal choice and thankfully there is a myriad of colours to choose from, remember that UPVC doors can suffer from the colour fading and that a wooden door will need painting and maintenance to keep it looking good. Composite doors are very durable and long-lasting which is why most homeowners who purchase a composite door always buy another. Decorative touches can make a world of difference too – the plainest timber door can be transformed with a good-quality letter plate, house numbers and a beautifully applied paint or stained-timber finish.
As for door furniture you can choose to have level handles, letter boxes, door knockers and spy holes fitted to any door. The style and finish of the furniture is another choice and there are quite a few options, most suppliers offer either a silver or gold finish to all the door furniture.
